Strabismus
Strabismus is a common condition affecting ocular alignment. It affects almost 5% of children. Often, the condition is evident to family members, however occasionally the deviation may be to small to detect without a comprehensive examination. Strabismus may also occur later in life. Treatment may involve glasses and frequently eye muscle surgery to improve alignment.
If left untreated strabismus can lead to amblyopia or reduced vision in one eye. Not all amblyopia is caused by strabismus. Other conditions, e.g. refractive error or media opacities can also lead to amblyopia. The brain will recognize the image of the better seeing eye and ignore the opposite eye, leading it to become “lazy”.
